About Melanocyl: Melanocyl Ointment (Methoxsalen/Aminobenzoic Acid) is a prescription medicine for topical use. It is used to treat a variety of conditions including psoriasis, vitiligo (leucoderma), photopheresis, palmoplantar pustulosis, skin conditions related to myocine fungicides and other similar ailments. It has two active ingredients, metoxsalen, and aminobenzoic acid. The former is a naturally occurring substance belonging to a group of compounds called psoralens/ furocoumarins. It makes the skin more photosensitive for better results during UVA exposure for psoriasis treatment. Methoxsalem 0.75% also improves vitiligo by spurring melanocytes (melanin producing cells) to act on the epidermis. Aminobenzoic acid 2%, on the other hand, is a salt that is used to treat fibrionic skin conditions like Peyrione’s disease. It is also widely used in sunscreen as an UV filter and enhances absorption of UV wavelengths from 290 to 320nm.

How to use Melanocyl

Usually, this medicine is applied by the medical professional at the hospital. It is applied before the UVA light treatment to improve absorption of the UV rays. The frequency of application will be determined by the severity of the medical condition and how you respond to treatment. Melanocyl ointment is applied to the affected area only. It is important to protect the treated area from direct sunlight for a couple of days. If you cannot avoid sunlight, wear protective clothing or use sunscreen to block UV rays.

Melanocyl Dosage

The doctor will apply the correct amount before starting UV radiation treatment. Melanocyl ointment is applied to the affected area two hours before the UV treatment, every 3 to 7 days. The duration is also dependent on your condition although it takes 6 to 9 months for full treatment. Results are visible after a few weeks of the treatment, and you should consult your doctor if there is no improvement after 3 months. The doctor should also instruct you on how long to keep the treated area covered and which sunscreen to use.

Melanocyl Side Effects

Melanocyl ointment has some unwanted side effects such as blisters and increased sensitivity to the sun. Due to the increased photosensitivity, patients can experience severe burns when exposed to sunlight or strong UV exposure. Other side effects include a headache, leg spasms, and infection symptoms on the skin and mood imbalances.

Melanocyl Precautions

Using other drugs that cause sun sensitivity alongside Melanocyl Ointment can cause severe burns on the skin. These drugs include doxycycline, tetracycline, methylene blue and demeclocycline and similar medicine which means you should inform your doctor of any medication you are using. Interactions with an unborn baby, when used on pregnant women, are not well documented, and you should update the doctor of your condition. It is also unknown if the drug can pass into breast milk. Keep the treated area covered after the treatment to prevent overexposure to UV radiation from sunlight.
