Selgin (Selegiline) helps control the symptoms of Parkinson`s disease (PD; a disorder of the nervous system that causes stiffness or slowness of movement, difficulties with muscle control, and balance) in people who are taking levodopa and carbidopa combination.

How to use Selgin


Selgin (Selegiline) helps control the symptoms of Parkinson`s disease (PD; a disorder of the nervous system that causes difficulties with movement, muscle control, and balance) in people who are taking levodopa and carbidopa combination. This medicine works by decreasing the dose of levodopa/carbidopa needed to control symptoms, stopping the effects of levodopa/carbidopa from wearing off between doses, and increasing the length of time that levodopa/carbidopa will control symptoms.

This medicine is part of a group of medications called monoamine oxidase type B (MAO-B) inhibitors. It works by increasing the amount of dopamine (a natural substance that is needed to control movement) in the brain.

Selgin Dosage


Selgin (Selegiline) tablets should be taken orally. Patients may be directed to take this medication twice daily. In order to avoid sleeping difficulties, patients are often directed to take this medication at breakfast and lunchtime. The standard maximum dosage is 5mg twice a day.

This drug should not be taken without a prescription and should be taken exactly as prescribed. If your physician has directed you to take this drug together with another drug to treat Parkinson`s disease, such as levodopa, you may be instructed to decrease your dosage of levodopa after you have been taking selegiline for 2 to 3 days.

Patients should be aware that Selgin works slowly so it may take a few weeks for the full effects and benefits of this drug to be noticed. You should never discontinue this drug unless directed to do so by your physician

Selgin Side Effects


Selgin (Selegiline) can cause nausea, heartburn, stomach upset, loss of appetite, or dry mouth. All these effects reduces once your body adjusts to this medication. Should incase the effects persist, do visit your physician. In order of relieving dry mouth, suck on ice chips or hard candy, chew (sugarfree) gum, drink water or use saliva a natural substitute.

This medication might optimize one`s skin`s sensitivity to sunlight. When this occurs, prevent prolonged sun exposure, put on protective clothing and apply sunscreen. Stay away from sunlamps. This remedy may cause lightheadedness or dizziness after the first few days of the treatment. Don`t engage in tasks that require your full attention if you are experiencing these effects.

Inform your physician immediately if you suddenly start experiencing any of the following side effects: chest pain, heartbeat, severe headache, nightmares, confusion, irregular tremors, difficulty breathing, clumsiness, involuntary movements (of the hands or face), difficulty urinating, hallucinations. If you observe other side effects not mentioned in this paragraph, contact your Doctor or pharmacist immediately.

Selgin Precautions


Selgin (Selegiline) is not be used with certain other medicines, as a serious reaction may occur. Inform your physician of all medicine you are taking before the start of treatment.

Consult your physician about consuming food that contains tyramine. Consumption of food containing tyramine while on this drug could increase blood pressure, cause a headache that could lead to a medical emergency. A 2 weeks probation period should be observed to stay off food that contains Tyramine after you stop using this medication.
