About Flagyl: Flagyl (Metronidazole) is a medicine prescribed to patients suffering from bacterial infections. Some of these bacterial infections that are treated using the medicine include abdominal infections, infections in the nervous system, skin, respiratory tract, vaginal infections as well as infections in the bones or intestines. Flagyl cannot and should not be used to treat viral infections which may include flu, common cold, and other types. The medicine may also be used for other purposes not listed here, talk to your physician about more uses of this medicine.
How to use Flagyl
Follow the instructions on the prescription label or those given by your physician when using this medicine. It should not be used for longer than instructed or in other doses (either higher or lower) than the ones prescribed. The medicine is available as tablets that should be taken orally. To maintain the effectiveness of the drug, do not chew, split or dissolve it but rather take it whole. You should take this medicine on an empty stomach, mostly 2 hours before your next meal or as instructed by your physician. During treatment, your physician may be required to perform blood tests to ascertain that the medicine has no harmful effects to you. Visit your physician for checkups as scheduled.
Flagyl Dosage
Take this medicine in the doses prescribed to you by your physician. If you happen to miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember and only skip it if it’s almost tome for the next dose. If you happen to skip two consecutive doses, consult your physician for further advice. Dosages differ depending on patient’s health condition, medical history, and the condition being treated. For a 7-day course treatment, a typical dosage is a prescription of 250mg to be taken each day thrice for seven consecutive days. As every prescription is unique to an individual, do not use another person’s dosage even if you suffer from similar conditions.
Flagyl Side Effects
You may experience side effects when using Flagyl (Metronidazole). Whereas some are common and fade fast, others may be bothersome and if left unchecked, can lead to the development of serious complications. It is, therefore, important that you consult your physician as soon as you notice such side effects which include; persistent nausea or even vomiting, development of a fever or sore throats, burn in different body parts including arms, legs, feet or hands, numbness, seizures, tingling or development of rashes. Other common side effects that should not be a cause for alarm include; poor appetite, headaches, feeling of a metallic taste in your mouth, constipation and stomach upsets. If any of these side effects worsen or persist, then you should contact your physician immediately.
Flagyl Precautions
If you are allergic to metronidazole, you should tell your doctor. Discuss with your doctor also about the risks of taking this medicine;
If you are pregnant, intend to get pregnant soon or are breastfeeding
If you have a history of any liver disease, stomach or intestinal diseases such as Crohn’s disease, have disorders of blood cells ( lack of either red or white blood cells), suffer from epilepsy or nerve disorders
If you are currently using other medication which includes prescribed or non-prescribed medicine, herbal products or any type of supplements
While taking this medicine, you may be required to stop your intake of alcohol up until three days after your dose has ended.
